LOCATION

Lava Service

LOCATION Lava Service provides information on lava-flow hazard zones for the five volcanoes on the Island of Hawaii — Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, Mauna Kea, and Kohala — ranked from 1 (highest hazard) to 9 (lowest hazard). Those zones are based on the location of past eruptions, past lava coverage, and topography. Hazard zone boundaries are approximate and gradational. The zones show relative hazard across Hawaii, and you should use them for general planning purposes only.

lava-flow hazard zones

The map depicts several lava-flow hazard zones on a portion of the Big Island of Hawaii.

What the zones mean

  • Zone 1 (most hazardous) includes summits and rift zones of Kilauea and Mauna Loa, where lava flows originate and vents have been repeatedly active for thousands of years.
  • Zone 2 is an area where lava has covered 15 to 25 percent of the land since 1800 and 25 to 75 percent within the last 750 years.
  • Zone 3 is farther away from recently active vents, and its topography makes it less likely that flows will cover those areas. Lava has covered 1 to 5 percent since 1800 and 15 to 75 percent within the last 750 years.
  • Zone 4 includes all of Hualalai. Lava coverage is about 5 percent since 1800 and less than 15 percent within the last 750 years.
  • Zone 5 is an area on Kilauea protected from rift- or summit-derived lava flows.
  • Zone 6 includes two areas on Mauna Loa protected from rift- or summit-derived lava flows. The underlying lava is more than 4,000 years old.
  • Zone 7 is the younger part of the dormant volcano Mauna Kea. Lava covered 20 percent of the area 3,500 to 5,000 years ago.
  • Zone 8 is the remaining part of Mauna Kea. Lava has covered only a small percent of the area in the last 10,000 years.
  • Zone 9 is the Kohala Volcano, which last erupted more than 60,000 years ago.
