FireLineTM

ISO's FireLineTM combines recognized risk factors and satellite imagery to pinpoint potential hazards from wildfire. You can use the information to help underwrite new business and manage your aggregate wildfire exposure.

ImageHere's how it works
ISO and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) have identified three critical factors that affect the risk of wildfire loss:

  • Fuel — Grass, trees, or dense brush can feed a wildfire.
  • Slope — Steeper slopes can increase the speed and intensity of wildfire and affect reconstruction costs.
  • Access — Dead-end roads can impede fire fighting equipment.

FireLine shows you the risk from each of the three factors — as well as overall hazard ratings for specific properties. Also, FireLine identifies properties located in Special Hazard Interface Areas — risks, outside fuels areas but exposed to wind-borne embers and high heat from nearby fuels (available in California only).

FireLine gives you wildfire information in any of several formats to meet your needs:

  • The FireLine GIS dataset contains detailed information on fuels, slope, and road access. The dataset is compatible with most geographic information systems (GIS) software (including ArcInfoSM, ArcView®, and MapInfo®). You can view and manipulate the data using your own GIS program.
  • The FireLine LOCATION® database gives you risk-specific information representing every address in the states indicated below. You get hazard scores for fuels, slope, and road access, a Special Hazard Interface Area indicator, and composite hazard scores.
  • You can also get FireLine information through a variety of online, batch-submission, and direct system-to-system delivery options.

Learn how FireLine info correlated with the burn areas in the 2003 California fires
According to an ISO study, FireLine classified 97.5% of the geographic area burned in the 2003 California wildfires as fuels. And the system identified 95.7% of the homes and commercial properties affected by the fires as exposed to the wildfire hazard. Virtually all the affected properties (99%) were within 2,500 feet of areas identified by FireLine as heavy or medium fuels.
